Scottie is 42 and Karol is 41. Scottie has completed one year of college and is self-employed in his own local coffee business where he runs the day to day operations. Karol has earned a Master's degree. Karol taught elementary school for 18 years and has resigned her teaching position be a stay-at-home mom. They have a solid financial foundation. They operate on a budget in line with the teaching of Dave Ramsey. The only debt they have is their mortgage which they plan to pay off ahead of schedule.
They are Christian.
This family lives in Grand Rapids, MI.
This family is Caucasian and wishes to adopt a child or up to three siblings age 0-6 of any race or ethnicity. They would consider an older child on a case-by-case basis. They hope to have an open adoption but fully respect the boundaries requested by the placing parents.
We started our journey together as husband and wife 11 years ago. This time of expanding our family through adoption has been anticipated for many years. We have a three bedroom ranch on a quiet cul-de-sac with maple trees lining the sidewalks.
Scottie (by Karol): Scottie is a confident, honest, and caring man. He works hard and likes to be efficient in how he gets work done. The joy of the Lord is Scottie’s strength. He willingly lends a hand to others and keeps an eye out for those in need. Anything I do with Scottie is fun. He is my best friend and biggest fan.
Karol (by Scottie): Karol is a delightful person who is full of life and happiness. She enjoys being active, yet will always be eager to sit and visit over a good cup of coffee. Connecting with people is one of Karol’s most endearing qualities.
We are involved in our local church family, live close to family and have great neighbors. We have been blessed to have family and friends who have adopted or been adopted. They have shared their experiences with us to offer encouragement and support. As often as our busy schedules permit, we share dinner, follow sporting events, play games, or catch up with our friends and family and neighbors with a visit. Our vacations usually find us traveling out West or up North to visit friends or family.
Whether on vacation or at home, we enjoy being outside and active. We like to hike and spend time at the beach. We balance our activity with rest and make simple recreation our goal. We anticipate a wonderful expansion to our family and activities with the adoption of a son or daughter.

As we anticipate adopting, we see a connection to having our family grow through adoption and how God has gathered His family through adopting us as sons and daughters. It is not a biological connection to becoming family; rather, it is a choosing to be family and a choosing to love someone from outside the biological bounds as though they were our very own flesh.
We will endeavor to establish and maintain an open adoption for the health and well-being of our child. We understand that all parties in an adoption, the birthparents, adoptive parents, and child work to make each adoption relationship unique to benefit the child’s well-being. We believe it is a self-sacrificing choice of love by the birthparents to place a child in an adoptive home.
We enjoy being outdoors and being active in every season. In the winter we try to cross-country ski every chance we get. In the summer, we like to spend time at Lake Michigan, bike, play disc golf, hike, golf, garden and have even been known to camp! Our evenings often include a walk around the neighborhood no matter the season.
We enjoy reading books on a variety of subjects ranging from fiction to non-fiction. When it comes to food, we love to try ethnic restaurants. Scottie also feeds us well with his talents on the barbeque smoker grill, and Karol provides the baked goods with homemade bread, granola, cookies and other desserts.
We spend time with friends and family over dinner and games and enjoy sharing life with our relatives, church family, and our neighbors.
