We want to thank you for considering adoption and for looking at our profile. We are in awe of your strength, courage and the selfless love you have for your child. Thank you.
We have been considering adoption for some time but made the decision to pursue adoption through Greater Hopes in the last year. Katie’s parents adopted three of her siblings 10 years ago and it has been an amazing gift and has made her family complete. We are hopeful and excited to have the opportunity to grow our family in this way.
Ben and Katie
Katie and Ben were set up on a blind date by some mutual family friends. We had our first date at a local brewery and we immediately connected. We had great, easy conversation, laughed a lot, and had a similar way of looking at life. Ben said to a friend later that night that we’d be married in a year. We were married exactly a year and a half later on October 26, 2012.
We love being married. We love to run errands together, have people over, watch shows, travel (even if it’s just a day trip), cook together, spend time with family, go to the beach, laugh and relax. We communicate well as a couple, working through disagreements with lots of understanding of the other. We’ve been through a lot, losing a child a few years ago during pregnancy. During this time, we became even closer and supported and cared for each other well.
We love our life together but deeply desire to add a child to our family. We take great joy and delight in spending time with many children in our life like our nephews and our friends’ children. We feel well equipped to handle the joys and challenges of adding a child to our own family.
Who we are:
Ben is the Director of Family Preservation Services at a local children’s non-profit and has worked there for almost 13 years. He oversees a division that supports children and families through mentoring, therapy and case management services. Ben is patient, calm and steady. He loves music and always has music playing in the house from the moment he comes home from work, often vinyl on our old record player. Ben is kind and sensitive and loves animals, especially his “niece” Waffle, a golden doodle. He is a helper and does much of the work around the house. In the summer, Ben likes to go to the family cottage and kayak or play with his nephews in Lake Michigan or read a book on the beach.
Katie will complete her Master of Social Work through Western Michigan in June of 2019. She also works part-time at a non-profit housing organization as the Volunteer and Stewardship Coordinator. She loves her work and their mission, which is to provide, safe, affordable, beautiful housing for all families and individuals. Katie is kind and sensitive; she is very emotionally and socially aware. Katie notices when someone is struggling and finds meaningful ways to care for that person. She is passionate about social justice and tries to do small things to improve the inequities of the world. She loves to laugh, enjoys meals with friends and going out to eat, and she loves being with and taking care of her nephews and her friend’s kids.
We value our faith. Our faith motivates us to love others in tangible, practical ways and compels us to work towards justice with grace. We do this in our church life, but it also permeates into all other areas of our lives including work, home, the organizations we are involved with, and our family life.
We value social justice and equality. We see so much inequity in the world around us and it’s hard to know where to start but we’ve chosen professions that we feel are providing some good in this world. We try to live intentionally and be aware of how our decisions impact others.
We value hospitality and try to welcome people into our lives in a variety of ways. We do this through providing meals, hosting visitors, and more generally, through accepting people as they are, learning from their uniqueness and differences.
Our Home and Community:
We moved into our current home about 2 years ago. We have fallen in love with our home and neighborhood and appreciate the diversity in age, race, and socioeconomic status. Ben enjoys running through the neighborhood and both Ben and Katie like taking walks during the spring, summer, and fall. We love going to the parks and restaurants around us. We’ve intentionally created spaces in our home for kids in our life to play.
Our Family and Friends:
We spend a lot of time with both of our families. Most Sunday afternoons are spent relaxing at Ben’s parents’ home which is the house he grew up in. We are very close with Ben’s older sister and her family. We spend a lot of time with Ben’s two nephews and often have them for sleepovers and attend their school and extracurricular activities.
Katie comes from a large family. She has 6 siblings–3 adopted and 3 biological. All but two of her siblings are married and she has two nephews (2 years old and 6 months old) who we love spending time with. Every summer Katie’s parents organize “family Olympics”, a day filled with simple games like corn hole and water balloon toss. Some of our closest friends are Katie’s sister and her husband who live in Ann Arbor. We make regular trips to Ann Arbor to visit them and love going to Detroit Pistons games, kayaking on a nearby river, and exploring Detroit and Ann Arbor.
We spend a lot of time with our friends and they are a huge source of joy and support. We love to have meals with them, play games, babysit for their kids, vacation together, and find excuses to celebrate together. We are very close with our friends and rely on each other for care, support, advice, and love living life with our friends.
We both grew up in Christian homes and our church community is very important to us. We attend a Christian Reformed church and have been involved with various things in church including helping with vacation Bible school and nursery, leading a group for LGBT+ people and their families and being members of a small group. We rely on our church community for support and try to support those in our church when they are struggling.
Thank you for taking the time to look at our adoption profile. We hope for peace and strength for you during this time and if you think we might fit into your adoption plan, we look forward to connecting. Thank you!
